The Image Loop.
Chooses self-image over reality.
Narcissists. Machiavellians. Psychopaths. They don't share a strategy - they share the same weakness.
Shame.
The Image Loop exists because the self underneath the image cannot be exposed. The dominance, the moral framing, the gaslighting - all of it is architecture built to keep one thing out of sight - the false self. This is not weakness in the conventional sense, this is the original wound that made the false-image necessary in the first place.
This shame is much deeper than surface level shame of having done something wrong - this is the early, structural kind - the belief that what's underneath is fundamentally unacceptable.
The self-image here wasn't built for vanity - it was built for survival. Status over substance. Persona over truth. The self-image they've constructed is the only architecture keeping them functional. Remove it, and there is actually nothing underneath that can hold.
This is why logic won't touch them, and love won't change them. This person isn't disagreeing - it's actually a system that cannot afford to be wrong, because being wrong means the image cracks, and the image is all there is.
The mechanism
The mechanism runs on one rule: the story of who you are must stay intact.
Not true, intact.
Reality gets filed against that story like evidence against a case, and most of it never reaches you. The comment that stings, the silence that confirms a suspicion, each gets sorted - fitted to the narrative, or buried where you will not find it again. You do not do this on purpose, the sorting happens before you could choose.
Stories bend all the time, but yours cannot afford to. Push reality against the story hard enough, past any reinterpretation, and the loop stops editing - it starts defending instead. The mirrors go: the friend who would tell you the truth becomes someone you see less, the evidence gets distorted where it cannot be removed, and the narrative repairs itself on the spot. The repair feels like relief, like coming home to the version of you that makes sense. That is the whole mechanism in one motion. It chooses self-image over reality and calls the choice protection. The story survives every test it meets. You just have to keep shrinking to fit it.
The three sub-orientations
Dominance-Stabilized
The image is held by force. The world is interpreted through the lens of the self-concept, and counter-evidence is met with escalation. The image is the fortress.
Moralized Identity
The self-concept is fused with virtue. To question the image is to question the moral standing of the person. Critique becomes existential threat.
Narrative-Stabilized
The story is rewritten in real time. The past is edited to fit the present self-concept. Memory is not a record but a tool for maintaining coherence.
What it's not
The Image Loop is not self-confidence - self-confidence can hold contradiction. Two truths can coexist. The Image Loop cannot hold this. The ego does not allow it. The exit is the recognition that the self-image was being protected at the cost of reality - and reality is where most people are living.
The exit
This is the hardest loop to recognise, acknowledge, and integrate. Exiting requires acknowledgement that the image is just one version of the self, not the Self. Change only comes when reality is accepted and prioritised over the self-image and self-ego.
